ISFP is an acronym which stands for Introversion, Sensing, Feeling and Perception. It is one of the sixteen personality types defined under Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) developed by renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung. MBTI was first propounded in Jung’s famous work, Psychological Types.

The indicator has its roots in theories of cognitive function and essentially, is a categorization of personality types based on observed psychological behavior.

The MBTI selections categorize differences in personalities of people based on the following:

  1. How does one get energy? – Through Introversion
  2. How does one take in information? – Through Sensing
  3. How does one make decisions? – Through Feelings
  4. How does one view the world? – Through Perception

Personality Traits

ISFPs are generally reserved and highly introspective. They are forever in the process of making ‘sense’ of the world through the information that they gather. They are acutely in touch with how things look, feel, taste and sound. Aesthetic appreciation comes naturally to them and most of them are creatively gifted.

They might be difficult to get to know as they do not give out information about themselves easily. They are good listeners actually but also like to keep their opinions to themselves. They seek refuge in solitude or occasionally in company of close friends to recharge themselves.

Beauty in any form attracts them. They are keenly in harmony with nature. They love animals and take great care of them. Travel and experimentation is an opportunity for them to feel new sensations.

A strong value system generally defines ISFPs. A value system devised on the basis of their sensory interactions with the world and a ‘feel’ of what is ‘right’. They rebel against anything which is in conflict with their values, even if it means sacrificing personal comforts.

Intensely perceptive, they love all forms of silent communication. They are great at reading body language, facial expressions and ‘reading between the lines’ in general.

They like to actually ‘do’ stuff then just think about it. They love to work with their hands where they are in touch with different materials. Their work is likely to be in expression of themselves. ISFPs generally reject ‘abstract thinking’ and its manifestations. Traditional non-experiential education is not for them. They also dislike working virtually or creating models on computers.

Planning is not one of their strengths. They are generally ‘living in the moment’ kind of people. Also they believe in treating each interaction with others as separate and do not easily form impressions or bias. They are spontaneous but also end up not making important decisions until the last minute.

ISFP love matches

Relationships

Carefree and gentle-hearted, they are true friends and great companions. In relationships, as in life, they go more by their feelings than logic. They are easily led, more so because they keep their real feelings under the lid and keep deferring to their partners to avoid discord.

They may expect their partners to be expert at silent communication like them and this may lead to conflict at later stages.

Positive and pragmatic by nature, they go to great lengths to please their partners. Their relationships are for life and they are prepared to make many sacrifices for it.

ISFPs make great partners as remain supportive and loyal under trying circumstances. They respect and identify with their partners’ need for space as they too need it to live their unique lives.

Among other personality types, they do well with ESFJs and ENFJs. The contrast offered by extroversion helps them relax in social interactions. The stronger judgment of ENFJ and ESFJ makes for better planning of activities and adds logic and depth to the sublime creativity of ISFP.

Careers

First and foremost, ISFPs are aesthetically inclined. Also, they like to do stuff at their own pace and in their own space. Originality and artistic ability makes them ideally suited to work as artists, designers or musicians. They can appreciate quality as well and hence can work as wine tasters, food critics or travel experts too.

They love to take care of people and animals. They are naturally comforting as individuals. They have an innate affinity for nature. Careers such as veterinarians, pediatricians or wildlife conservationists are good possibilities depending upon individual demeanor and preferences.
