Better Online Profiles attract better quality connections!

If you have tried to meet someone online, you know that your chances improve significantly if your profile says accurate things about you; in the right way. However, you may have found that it can be a bit challenging to express yourselves in this manner because you are interacting with a computer interface instead of a real human being (at least to begin with). As a result, online profiles are made on an impulse without realization of the impact words have on the people reading them.

When conveying personality, character, preferences, attributes, and such, obviously one size does not fit all. Nonetheless, some general guidelines you might find beneficial when sitting down to convey descriptive.

Do’s

1. The first thing to do is to write as if you were talking to someone. Perhaps even re-read the sentence once typed to make sure it makes sense. Keeping sentences short is helpful to divert from confusion.

2. Deliver your message with sincerity and truth. You do not want to the other person to be disappointed when s/he meets you! So a wrongful build-up about something about you, what you believe, or what you are looking for/want does not help.

3. Keep it real with nouns while telling anecdotes. Do not go overboard with the adjectives. If you are going to use a joke be sure it is not distasteful. You can never predict someone’s perception in humor so it is better to be on the safe side.

4. Look to highlight the fun aspects of your personality. Take pride in what you do and who you are. Everyone has a uniqueness that is all their own! What makes you stand out? Tell about your travels, your family history, your talents, your adventurous attitude, and etcetera. Everyone has a few of those qualities. And these need to be brought out. Show confidence and conviction in your opinions and thoughts. Don’t be afraid to show your distinctive colors.

5. Be proud of your education, you are privileged to have the opportunity and dedication in the pursuit.  Also, mention your likings, hobbies, interests, and topics you like to ponder. If you are into photography, mentioning that ‘I spent a week in Africa shooting Wildebeest migration’ is a fantastic statement. Not only does it communicate your hobby but also the patience and effort you are willing to invest in it. You are communicating that you enjoy travel as well.

6. Everyone loves ‘do-gooders’. So if you are working for some charitable organization or volunteering, it is a fine idea to mention it. Even if there is a cause that is close to your heart, make it known. Such statements show that you espouse causes outside your professional career and in general, you care!

Do Not’s

1. If you are embarrassed about being online and socializing, do not go online. It is a cardinal sin to say ‘I cannot believe I am here’ on your summary.

2. Being ‘down-to-earth’ maybe great but do not mention it. This is a phrase that is thought to be a bit overused.  You don’t want to come across as lacking interest and not creative.

3. Having plans and goals in life is a good thing, but sharing them with others before you get to know them is probably not the best idea. It might communicate a lack of desire to change or be flexible. Explore and keeping an open-minded is essential.  You might come across some really wonderful people that you didn’t realize you could appreciate until you met them.

There are many reasons and ways to benefit from having an online profile that is indicative of the true you.  If you moved locations, meet new friends in your new area code. If you are job hunting or exploring new industries of interest, start professional networking. Looking to do a little reflection of yourself or wishing to meet that potential life partner, take the initiative and embark on the journey.

Just make sure you are in the right mood to make the most of your posting.  You get out of it what you put into it. So, get into your favorite pajamas, turn on some good music, and have a fun night in making relationships for future nights out!
