ENFJ is one of the sixteen personality types defined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The MBTI was developed by renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung through clinical observations of his patients over a long period of time. The indicator has its roots in theories of cognitive function and charts out a psychological classification of personality types.
ENFJ is an abbreviation for Extraversion, iNtuition, Feeling and Judgement. Each of the four characteristics refers to a specific personality dimension of a person.
Personality Traits
ENFJ relate to their social world through Extraversion. They gain energy and feel motivated by their interactions with people around them. Generally they enjoy large gatherings, parties, concerts and even chance encounters with strangers. Typically, ENFJs are the ‘life’ of the community around them. They excel at gaining a quick understanding of the people around them. They constantly endeavour to find out more about people; what they feel, where they work, what makes them tick and more. Their thirst for building new social connections is insatiable.
Like INFPs, they too focus more on the bigger picture rather than bothering about the mundane details.
Generally considered as reliable people, ENFJs tend to take their responsibilities very seriously. Not only because of the pride they take in their work but also in recognition of the fact that their work is part of a larger scheme and significantly impacts lives of many others. They tend to be terrific team players and almost automatically assume the role of cheerleaders within the team.
They dream big, plan big and generally tend to multi-task well. They tend to form opinions quickly and strongly. Occasionally, they might be guilty of being obstinate even in face of strong counter evidence as their convictions are more based on their ‘feel’ of the situation than an assessment of the ground realities. Wary about the unpredictability of the future, they like to plan early and plan well. At times ENFJs dwell excessively about the future, even at the cost of living in the present.
Fiercely loyal, they expect the same from their friends. Typically, ENFJs are the ‘givers’ in social interactions. They have a genuine desire to help not just their associates but also the larger community around them. Quick to pick a common ground, they almost always find interesting ways to nurture relationships.
Relationships
Like other spheres of their life, ENFJs show immense dedication in their relationships. Gifted conversationalists, they are great company. In romantic liaisons, they go to great lengths for the happiness of their partners, looking after every need of their counterparts. They never hesitate from taking the relationship to the next stage and are known for unflinching commitments.
Emotionally they invest a lot in a relationship and are susceptible to huge devastation when a relationship ends. A sense of victimhood is also pretty common. Sexually, they are incredibly passionate and true ‘givers’. They take every opportunity to shower their partner with affection. Among the other MBTI personality types, ENFJs tend to do well with INFPs and ISFPs. The creative unpredictability brought in by the Perceiving types makes the routine life of ENFJs more fun.
Career
As noted earlier, ENFJs live for people. They generally do well in professions where they have to interact with a wide audience. They possess loads of charisma and persuading abilities as well. These attributes make them well suited for jobs in sales, teaching, human resources and event management. Inherent altruism makes many of them choose social development as their life endeavour.
ENFJs progress impressively in their careers due to their networking and people management skills. They enjoy the thrill that new challenges present and hence move quickly between jobs to further their ambitions.
